Lymes' Senior Center Board of Directors Meeting 06/16/2014
LYMES’ SENIOR CENTER
BOARD OF DIRECTOR’S MEETING
JUNE 16, 2014
PRESENT: Sue Campbell, Ruth Young, Mary Miles, Bob Pierson, Ann Griffith, Gary Weed, Don Tapper, Dot McAndrew, Diana Seckla
ABSENT: Doris Rand,, Diane Blackwell, Doris Johnson, Stephanie Lyon
GUEST: Ethan Fenton, Mrs. Fenton, Suzanne Thompson, Bonnie Reemsnyder
The meeting was called to order at 2:00pm by Chairperson, Sue Campbell.
SECRETARY REPORT: (Judy Dutton) Motion made & seconded to accept report as presented.
TREASURER REPORT: (Robert Pierson) Bob handed out copies of the report & gave a verbal explanation.  Motion made & seconded to accept report as presented. The Essex Checking Account has been closed. The account now is with the “Friends Group”. The expenses for the government filing & everything to get this completed were $960.00. The attorney also needed a check because he had paid for this out of his own pocket. Bob also paid out of his pocket for the checks to start this up.  A motion was made & seconded to transfer another $1000.00 to the account.
REPORT FROM ETHAN FENTON ON THE GARDEN PROJECT:
  • 2 beds have been started
  • Mesh is on to keep the moles out
  • Wants to know what we would like to plant in the garden
  • Suggestions; tomato’s/beans/cucumbers/herbs, etc.
  • Bridge Gardens will donate the plants
  • Soil was donated
  • Latham’s in Lyme donated the lumber for the beds
  • Suzanne Thompson, being a master gardener to help layout the design for the garden
  • Ethan will  have access to the hose to water the garden
  • May possibly to do a drip hose
  • Will cost about $20.00-$40.00 for this
  • The fence for around the garden was donated
  • $75.00 from the garden club
  • A motion was made & seconded to give Ethan a $100.00 donation from The Lymes’ Senior Center
  • Possibly plant lettuce in the fall
It was a pleasure to meet Ethan & he got a big THANK YOU from the Board of Directors for taking on this project.
COMMUNICATIONS:
  • Dot McAndrew will send another card to Doris Johnson
  • It was mentioned that the library & Sound View are having concerts on Thursday night, too
  • Won’t this be a conflict
  • Possibly, but too late to change it now
  • Will discuss this again before we set up the summer concerts next year
SPECIAL EVENTS: None
DIRECTORS REPORT: (Stephanie Lyon)
  • The Art & Nature weekend is Friday, June 21st, 22nd, & 23rd
Grand Piano was donated by local resident, Barbara Preston
A phone call of appreciation was made
Bob Pierson will write a letter of donation when we get the appraisal paperwork from her
Dot McAndrew will send her a thank you note
Regional Doo Wop Review Dinner & Dancing Event was very successful.
We have officially joined the Traveling Team of Waterford & East Lyme Senior Centers
  • The first trip will be a day trip to Cape Cod Canal called Dixieland Jazz Cruise on July 27th
We have ten seats reserved for this event
Volunteer Lunch was great
52 people attended
This will be an annual event
  • Plaque will be hung when it is returned with the new etched plates
PROPERTY: (Don Tapper/Gary Weed)
  • Bid sheet to be put out for the automatic front doors
  • Will put add in the paper that we are looking for bids
  • Already in the Capital Budget
  • Hopefully it will be done by late fall
  • Will finish painting the outside of the building

SEARCH COMMITTEE: (Diana Seckla)
  • PRESIDENT:         Susan Campbell
  • VICE PRESIDENT: Ruth Young
  • TREASUERER:       Robert Pierson

  • Motion made & seconded to accept this slate of officers
FINANCE: (Bob Pierson/Doris Rand/Gary Weed) Bob does most of the Board of Directors paperwork from home. A motion was made & seconded for the Board to pay for the ink cartridges for the printer that he uses at home.
OLD BUSINESS:
  • No meeting in July or August
  • No one who rents the building is to have access to the sound system or the Wii Game units
  • The sound system is only available if Bob Pierson or Stephanie Lyon are present
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Discussed chair transporter & storage to be a possibly in the future
  • There is one at Town Hall if anyone would like to see what it looks like
  • Banner for upcoming events to be discussed further
  • Would it be practical because we would only use it for a few events
  • Need permit to have one
  • Zeleck puts it up & takes it down
  • Could get one with removable letters
  • Need to put request in advance to put up in the area that it would be used
OTHER: What should we do with the other piano? Ask at the Club Meeting if anyone would like it Check with Nicole at Town Hall to see what the proper procedure is for donating it. Possibly one of the schools could use it.
A motion was made & seconded to change the time of the Board of Directors Meeting starting in September from 2:00pm to 1:00pm.
Motion made and seconded to adjourn at 2:45pm.
